Advice to explorers everywhere: if you would like to recieve due credit for your discoveries, keep a detailed account of your journeys as Columbus did. On Septemeber 28, 1492, after four weeks at sea, he writes: Dear diary.. I means journal. Yes, dear journal. That's what I meant to say. Whew. Anyway, we have yet to discover America, and the crew has become increasingly rebellious. I have decided to turn back if we have not spotted it by Columbus Day. Will write again later if not killed by crew. P.S. Last night's buffet was fabulous, the ice sculptures magnificent. Cuthbert Soup
About This Quote

In 1492, Christopher Columbus kept a journal of his travels on the long voyage from Spain to the Americas. In this journal he describes how he had been threatened on several occasions by mutiny among the crew of his ship. He writes about the preparations for the voyage, his hopes for riches in the New World, and his hopes for a peaceful voyage. His last entry was dated September 28.

The next day, after having spotted land and made landfall, he closed his journal and said: "Dear diary...I means journal." He then proceeded to write: "We have yet to discover America and the crew has become increasingly rebellious. I have decided to turn back if we haven't spotted it by Columbus Day." The log of Columbus's ship has been the subject of intense debate ever since. Some scholars say that Columbus did not make landfall in America until October 11; others say it was October 12, or even 13th.

It is generally agreed that he did not write this journal until after reaching land.
